Prevalence of ectopic pregnancy in surgical patients at a tertiary hospital in Rivers State, Nigeria

Background: Ectopic pregnancy is the most common cause of maternal mortality in first trimester pregnancy. Presentation usually late especially developing countries world. Surgery preferred management modality compared to other options because challenges with monitoring cases un-ruptured ectopic pregnancies. The estimated global prevalence 1-2%%. Aim: To determine surgical patients at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH). Method: This study was a one-year retrospective research Surgical (Surgery and Obstetrics/gynaecology departments) who had RSUTH. comprised all consecutive surgeries these departments for period under review. Permission obtained from Head Department obstetrics gynaecology Structured profoma used extract information patients’ case notes analyzed using SPSS version 25. Result: subjects were 250, comprising 98 (39.2%) males 152 (60.8%) females. age range 22 years 56 years. mean 31 which 132 (52.8%) gynaecological while 118 (47.2%) non-gynaecological surgeries; 16 (6.4%) 12 (4.8%) ruptured 4 (1.6%) unrutured. All that laparotomy salpingectomy. Conclusion: RSUTH 6.4%. Majority present intervention (emergency salpingectomy).
